The Week of December 14th
Weekly Newsletter

Last week was an eventful week and this one is sure to be even more exciting! Please make sure that your student is well rested and fed when they enter the classroom. We will be conducting MAP testing during this final week of school in 2015.

Last week, students learned about the traditions of Diwali and Hanukah. They enjoyed eating latkes provided by Laney's family and listening to the story of Hanukah read by Laney's Grandmother. It was a real treat! Students also created beautiful Rangoli patterns using dried beans and the pattern of their choice. Here is a picture of our display from the Festival of Lights.

We had so much fun singing and dancing at the Musical Explorers Concert last Wednesday and we will attend the 2nd concert some time in March!

There will be a Holiday Sing-Along held in the Back Playground at Charles Ellis on 12/18 at 1:30. It is really quite an event! The whole school sings beautiful music together. If you haven't been able to attend in the past, I encourage you to do so!

2nd and 3rd grade students should be using the Compass Learning website at home if they have access to the internet. This website uses Common Core strategies to help students practice the material they are learning at school. Usernames and passwords were sent home with 2nd and 3rd graders. If you did not receive them please send me an email so I can get them to you. I have added the Compass Learning link to this page. It is to the right of this post under the the Important Links tab.

Time is just flying by and students are working hard in Room 21! Last week, students had lessons on Money, Quadrilaterals, Rounding, Comparing Fractions and that is just in Math! Here are some pictures that I snapped of students working with Math materials in the classroom.

We will be attending the Musical Explorers Concert this week, so if your student hasn't returned the permission slip, please do so as soon as possible.

The Book Fair is open 12/7-12/11 and is located in the Media Center. Students will be able to go check it out during the school day and take home wish lists for families to review. It will also be open before and after school if you would like to stop by then. The Book Fair will be open late on Thursday, 12/10 during the PTA Meeting and Festival of Lights.

Please make sure that your student gets enough sleep during these final two  weeks of school in 2015. We have begun mid-year SRI and MAP testing. Students should come to school well rested and fed in order to do their best on these benchmark tests.

                               Room 21 Newsletter

Thank you to all that have signed up to bring items for the Harvest Feast! We are still in need of a few items. Follow this link for a list of the needed items: Harvest Feast Please send in all items by Monday morning as we begin feast preparations the day before the feast. Our Harvest Feast is a classroom community building opportunity in which students enjoy a meal that they have prepared, as a class. We will have events throughout the year where parents are welcome such as Donuts with Dads in February and Muffins with Moms in May.

PTA Read-A-Thon is well underway! You should have received information last week from your child. Please help us with our goal of 100% participation! Even $1 raised counts as participation. Proceeds this year will go towards readers theater that will be housed in the media center for all to use. Readers theater provides fluency practice for students and is also always enjoyed by the students! The top class that raises the most money gets a $50 gift card for classroom materials! Also, the top two classes get entered into a drawing for a class party!

2nd and 3rd grade students should be using the Compass Learning website at home if they have access to the internet. The Week of November 15th
                                                        Room 21 Newsletter

Our students in Room 21 have been working diligently on their research projects. They have many creative ideas and we are looking forward to seeing the end results when they present them to rest of the class!

2nd and 3rd grade students should be using the Compass Learning website at home if they have access to the internet. This website uses Common Core strategies to help students practice the material they are learning at school. Compass Learning uses individual test results to choose appropriate lessons for each student and the SRI and MAP tests are given to students online so using the internet in this manner should be great practice for those tests! Usernames and passwords were sent home on Thursday with 2nd and 3rd graders. If you did not receive them please send me an email so I can get them to you. I have added the Compass Learning link to this page. It is to the right of this post under the the Important Links tab.

The 1st and 2nd grade field trip was canceled, once again, due to the rain and it being a walking field trip.  We have rescheduled for April 26, 2015. Forms will go home in March for that date.  **We also have our field trip to Skidaway Island State Park on Wednesday November 18, 2015.  Remember to send your child in appropriate clothing for the outdoors/woods such as pants, tennis shoes, etc. You must apply any desired bug spray at home, as we are not allowed to apply at school.

PTA Read-A-Thon has begun! Please encourage your child to read, read, read! This year, the funds will be used to purchase Readers Theater kits. Students who raise more than $100 will receive a gift certificate for the Book Fair coming up! The Holiday Book Fair will be held in the Media Center December 7-11.

We are planning a Harvest Feast for Tuesday- 11/24! We will come together as a community to enjoy a meal prepared by the students. I am looking forward to seeing the students work to prepare the meal and then sit down to take delight in the results of their effort! We are going to need family contributions to make this meal possible. I will post a signupgenius.com list soon, so be on the lookout!

The Week of November 2nd
Room 21 Newsletter
The 1st and 2nd Grade field trip that was scheduled for Tuesday the 27th was canceled due to the rain and we rescheduled for November 9, 2015.  I will send home new permission slips this week. Please return them filled in completely as soon as possible.

3rd Graders thoroughly enjoyed their field trip, "It's All Greek!". They learned about our roots in Greek architecture via the many examples in our historic downtown buildings.  Ask them about it!

A slew of paperwork has been and will be going home this week that needs your attention. Please pay close attention to your child's folders and return the forms when they are filled out.  I will be sending home verification forms on Monday. ALL verification forms must be returned, even if there are no changes to be made. If there are no changes, please note that on the form.

Bobcat dads came by and read books to our class on Friday.  Thank you to all the dads that volunteered and helped make it possible to the upstairs classes!  Students feel the importance of school and learning when they see parent involvement; again, thank you.

Tutorial begins this week, Monday.  Student test scores were used in determining which students were invited to join due to limited resources. If you received a letter home, please return it as soon as possible either agreeing to allow your child to join the program, or declining.
