The Week of August 28th

Weekly Newsletter

With August coming to an end and September quickly approaching, we will introduce students to the first of Maria Montessori's "Great Lessons". On Monday, our students will learn of "The Coming of the Universe". This ties in nicely with the Parent Education Presentation in the Media Center at 5:30 on Tuesday. The Lower Elementary teachers will have some of the materials that are used for Cosmic Education set up and we can answer any questions that you may have. Please come and join us; we would love to see you! Our Lower Elementary Students will then perform at the PTA Meeting in the Multipurpose Room directly following the presentation.

I sent home login information for the Xtra Math and Moby Max Websites on Friday. Students can use these websites to practice skills that they are learning at school. If you have any questions about these websites or the logins please email me.

The Week of August 21st

Weekly Newsletter

We had another eventful 2nd full week of school in Room 21. We started reading the book The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo, which the students seem to love. Students also started biome work. This is a beautiful work that encompasses the Science, Reading, Writing and Art. We are still focusing on KINDNESS in the classroom and outside. Students are encouraged to continue practicing kindness at home, at the park, on the bus and anywhere they encounter friends.

The Week of August 14th

Weekly Newsletter

We had an exciting week in Room 21! On Wednesday, we received our new rug, which was donated to the class by several donors on the website Donors Choose. The students made thank you cards for the donors who were kind enough to help us get this much needed rug. We also received boxes on Friday from another Donors Choose project that was funded last year. The students are going to be surprised on Monday morning when they get to see our new materials in action!

MAP and SRI Testing- 2nd and 3rd grade students have begun MAP (Math) and SRI (Reading) testing. We will continue to test students this week. We use these tests to guide our instruction so that students are met with a curriculum that suits their needs. We want to meet students where they are academically, as well as socially. Students (especially 2nd graders) are not expected to meet the benchmarks at the beginning of the year. We will be guiding them through direct instruction and they will practice skills which will help them to master the necessary standards to meet the benchmarks by the end of the year.

DIBELS and Fry Word Testing- 1st grade students will be tested using DIBELS for both Math and Reading. 1st grade students have seen these tests before and should be well acquainted with them.

Reading Nightly- Your student should be reading nightly. This is key to having a foundation in place that we will build on in the classroom. Reading with a parent or sibling  is such an important part of this learning process, especially if you have a student that is not reading yet!

Field Trip Forms- Thank you to the families that have already returned the field trip forms for the year. Several field trip packets were sent back to school without funds. We are collecting $10 for each student to cover the cost of all of our field trips for the year. If you did not send in $10 with your field trip packet, please send it in to school in a sealed envelope with your student. If it would be a financial burden for your family to send in $10 at this time, just email me and we discuss other options for your family.

WISH LIST- plastic forks and spoons

The Week of August 7th

Weekly Newsletter

Welcome to the first FULL week of school!  I am so happy to be getting back in to the swing of things! Last week our Grace and Courtesy focus was Kindness. We had several lessons and discussions about treating each other with kindness. After reading the biography of Maria Montessori, the students also began working on a timeline of their lives. This week, students will have lessons in Math, Science, Reading, Writing and Social Studies. Students will have blank work plans that they will fill in as they have lessons and complete work.

Communication Folders- If you would like to purchase a communication folder and put it in your child's bag please do. I do not fill folders for students, but I do hand out papers and students are responsible for putting them in their book bags and taking them home to you. If I have sent something home for parents to sign and return, I will ask your student for it the following day. If you have communication for me, your student will need to make sure that I get it, because I don't check folders. The best way to communicate with is me email. My email address is marianne.howze@sccpss.com.

Snack Sign Up- I did my best to make sure that each family had at least one of their first choices. If the snack sign up was not returned to me by your student, I randomly filled in a date with his/her name. The food allergy questionnaires that were sent home indicate that we do have an allergy to cow's milk in the classroom, so please be mindful of that. Although, I do have extra snacks on hand in case something is sent in that contains milk.

Charles Ellis Family Handbook- Below you will find the Charles Ellis Family Handbook. This handbook will help you to become more familiar with our school and the Montessori Method that we use to guide our instruction.
