Cooking in the Classroom
The fire inspector came to Ellis and we found out that having our new oven in the classroom is in violation of the fire code. We will need to use our oven in the cafeteria from now on. Parent volunteers will be necessary to make this happen. So, if you are interested in volunteering to help our students cook in the cafeteria, please send me an email. I will respond to the parent's who have volunteered when we have an activity planned.

The Week of October 16th

Weekly Newsletter

Hurricane Matthew
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family safe and recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. I understand that some of you are facing some real challenges in the coming days and weeks. Please know that if you or your student needs anything, I would like to offer my support through this very tough time. If you are aware of any other student/family who have been affected by the storm and need any kind of assistance, please let me know and I will see what we can do to help out.

I have been up to the school and there has been no damage to Room 21. I took Winn-Dixie (the frog) with me when we evacuated and he weathered the storm. I'm sure he will be glad to be back in Room 21 with all of you soon!

This is what we know:
  • On Sunday, October 9, 2016 the district began  immediate assessment and recovery operation.
  • All district facilities have gone through debris removal and cleanup protocols.
  • All facilities have power.
  • No facility experienced a catastrophic event that rendered it useless.  Exterior damages were mostly incurred due to the impact of wind, roof leaks were experienced at many schools, and some flooding.  Downed trees created impasse issues, but they have since been cleared.
  • In situations where flooding did exist or water entry occurred due roof leaking, moisture protocols have been followed for proper remediation, dry out, and air quality testing.
  • Facilities have been thoroughly checked and have been deemed safe for operation.
  • All facilities have gone through proper cleanup and testing protocols, where warranted, and are deemed safe for opening.
  • School Make Up Days - If any days are to be made up it will come by a recommendation of the Superintendent.  The Superintendent is currently working to present an option to the Board during the Nov. 9 School Board meeting.  Based on emergency flexibility and waiver options it is unlikely that all 9 days (8 for Hurricane Matthew and 1 for Tropical Storm Hermine) will be required for make-up.  No further information is available at this time as to the amount of make-up days or when they will be taken.
Field Trips
While the school was closed last week, our class missed a field trip to downtown Savannah. We will reschedule the field trip and I will let you know the new dates as soon as I have the information. Please look for new field trip forms to be signed at that time.

Fall Conferences
I was unable to hold previously scheduled conferences due to school closings. The following link will take you to the new Fall Conference Schedule. Please sign up for a date and time that works for your family. If we met prior to the school closings, there is no need for you to sign up again.

Sidewalk Arts Festival
The Sidewalk Arts Festival will be rescheduled. I will keep you updated as I receive more information.
